Arugam Bay is located 220 km due East of Colombo. It is a popular surfing and tourist destination in Sri Lanka. Arugam Bay is on the list of the top Ten Surf points in the world. Situated on the South East side of Sri Lanka Arugam Bay receives the same Antarctic winter swell's that hit Indonesia in the in the middle of the year. The best time of the year is between May and November when the predominant wind is offshore for at least the first half of the day
CLIMATE
Pottuvil and Arugam Bay are situated on the Indian Ocean in the dry zone of Sri Lanka's South-East coast. The area is rich in bird life and wildlife in the widespread jungle areas, wetlands and lagoons nearby. It has it's own specific climate with very little rain compared to the rest of the Island.
Average Temperatures in the shade are:
28-30 degrees Celsius during Nov. Dec. and Jan. 30-32 degrees Celsius during Feb. Mar. and Sept. Oct. 32-36 degrees Celsius during April May June July August
There are approximately 3,500 people live near Arugam-Bay. It consists of three small villages, where fishing and farming are the main occupations. The farmers grow rice and keep Cattle for production of Meat and Curd. Most local people in Ullae are families from the Tamil community. There are some Sinhalese families as well. They follow the Buddist tradition.
SURFING

Arugam Bay is the Southern most beach resort of the Eastern coast. It is a very popular surfing center ranked 3rd among the best 20 beaches of the world by the British Surfers Association.
